I stepped into the Audubon Ballroom with the character of Washington Heights as the back drop. We pulled the door and it was locked. We tried another and another. Finally, a security officer greeted us by saying the ballroom was closed for a private event. My sister, who happens to be witty and quick on her feet, said enough to get us in there.
Thank God for her. The Audubon Ballroom is now the Malcolm X and Dr. Betty Shabazz Memorial and Educational Center. I roamed the 1st and 2nd floor studying each picture and quote while swallowing mixed emotions. When I stood at the exact spot where brother Malcolm X was gunned down, I was sad and mad because it did not have to happen that way.

Be sure to visit the center while in NYC.
